reveillon-rio450-2015Wednesday’s Rio Nightlife Pick – It’s New Year’s Eve and millions of revelers are expected to head to the iconic Copacabana shoreline dressed in white to celebrate this year’s Réveillon (New Year’s Eve party).

The event is free and open to the public. This year’s theme, “Rio 450,” will begin the year-long celebrations of the 450th anniversary of the city.

At midnight, barges floating in the Atlantic Ocean will release 24 tons of fireworks, with some expected to rocket over 100 meters above the water.

That’s not all the entertainment the beach has to offer tonight. Beginning at approxiamately 6PM, three temporarily erected stages on the beach will host performances and DJs spinning live.

The main stage, located in front of the Copacabana Palace, will host an opening DJ, Baia Toca Raul, Detonautas,Titãs, Seu Jorge (before the midnight fireworks), and the 2014 Carnaval champion samba school, G.R.E.S. Unidos da Tijuca following the pyrotechnics.

The Santa Clara Stage, located across from Rua Santa Clara, will host an opening DJ, Bossa Cuca Nova, Revelação, Maria Rita (before the fireworks), and Roupa Nova and the samba schools, G.R.E.S. Salgueiro and G.R.E.S. Portela (playing for 25 minutes each) following the fireworks.

Last, but by no means least, the Radio Globo Stage, located on the stretch of shoreline in neighboring Leme, will host DJ Ailton, Grupo 100%, Grupo RP, Leandro Sapucahy, Grupo RP (before the fireworks), and Styllo X and DJ Ailton spinning, following the fireworks.

Plan ahead for transportation as traffic will close on Avenida Atlântica at 3PM and the metro (subway) will be operating on a special holiday schedule with tickets sold in advance that are only valid for one hour periods.
