smashingpumpkinsWednesday’s Rio Nightlife Pick – Tonight the American alternative band, Smashing Pumpikns will perform live at Citibank Hall in Barra da Tijuca. The Californian quintet, Young the Giant will open for the night.

Founded by singer-songwriter and guitarist Billy Corgan in 1988, The Smashing Pumpkins grew to be one of the most influential alternative bands in the 90s and continue to maintain a worldwide fanbase. To date, they have released eight studio albums, which include tracks ranging from metal inspired grunge, to softer alternative, to goth infused rock to psychedelic indie, to pure rock. The release date for their tenth album is anticipated for later this year or the beginning of 2016.

The group, Young the Giant, released their debut album in 2010 and are known for hits that include “My Body”, “Apartment”, and “Cough Syrup.

Both groups are part of the 2015 São Paulo Lollapalooza lineup.

Lollapalooza Countdown @ Karaokê Indie (Botafogo)
Tonight the weekly Karaokê Indie party is celebrating the countdown to the upcoming Lollapalooza music festival in São Paulo on March 28th and 29nd. During the karaoke event, on the first floor there will be special giveaways of the CDs, DVDs, shirts, books, buttons and more of the artists in this year’s lineup. On the second floor DJ Mamede with spin the best of bands and artists that have perviously performed at Lollapalooza, including NIN, Pixies, New Order, Phoenix, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, and more. Additionally during the night, promotions will include two for one specials on five drinks: caipirinha, caipivodka, Hi-fi, Cuba Libre, and mojito.

Lu Fogaça and Trio (Gamboa)
Tonight at Trapiche Gamboa it’s time for a roda de samba with Brazilian singer-songwriter Lu Fogaça and his trio. The group will blend modern music with samba, forró and MPB. They are well known for their reinterpretations of works by João Nogueira, João Bosco, Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes, Chico Buarque and Luiz Melodia, among others.

Nilze Carvalho and Karyme Branka (Centro)
Tonight at Rio Scenarium, singer-songwriter Karyme Branka will start off the night by performing the best of classic samba. Then at 10:30PM, singer-songwriter and mandolinist Nilze Carvalho with perform her lively samba works.

Joía Rara and Pedro Holanda (Lapa)
Singer and guitarist Pedro Holanda will start things off tonight at 7:30PM at Carioca da Gema and the group Joía Rara will follow at 9:30PM with their diverse samba repertoire.

Baile Da Tchuguderia (Lapa)
On Wednesday nights in March, the Baile Da Tchuguderia party at Lapa’s Leviano bar is celebrating new music in Rio. Event week Angelo B, Udi Fagundes and Cláudio Costa of the band Gabriel Pensador will play live and welcome a special guest. DJ Chicote will also spin during the night.
