Brazil’s Armed Forces Operate in Rio’s Niteroi Favela Communities

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – More than 2,600 armed forces personnel participated in an operation during the early morning hours of Wednesday (August 16th) to arrest accused drug kingpins in favela communities in and around Niteroi, the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro.

By the middle of the morning ten suspects had already been arrested and according to officials one soldier was shot during the operation.

For the operation, dubbed Dose Dupla (Double Dose) the armed forces used two helicopters, 33 armored vehicles and another 120 vehicles.
