RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL — Former president of the United States, Bill Clinton and daughter, Chelsea, are in Rio de Janeiro this week to participate in the first meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Foundation in Latin America. Clinton participated in a dinner Sunday evening at the Palácio da Cidade (Palace of the City) hosted by Rio’s mayor Eduardo Paes.
The event is part of the programming for the 2013 Annual CGI Meeting Latin America or “Clinton Global Impact” initiative held Monday, December 9th at the Copacabana Palace Hotel.
Chelsea Clinton and O Globo TV presenter Luciano Huck visited the Vidigal favela community in Zona Sul (South Zone) Sunday afternoon to complete the reformation of the Santo Amaro daycare center.
This visit was part of Clinton’s Day of Action program which, in its sixth edition, took place for the first time outside the United States. With learning materials and resources donated by companies and with the support of volunteers, Santo Amaro gained improvements in its infrastructure with freshly painted walls, new furniture and books.
The 2013 Annual Meeting will bring CGI members, who are more than 150 heads of state, twenty Nobel Prize laureates, and hundreds of leading CEOs, heads of foundations and NGOs, together under the annual theme of “Mobilizing for Impact” to drive effective action on global challenges.
An event that seeks to unite efforts to propose actions for social and economic progress, the annual meeting will focus on three main topics: development of human capacity, planning of environmental sustainability and mobilization of technology and innovation. The meeting is available on live stream via the CGI site.
