RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Why is Argentina opening its border with Brazil and not with Paraguay? The government’s answer contradicts the Argentine argument, which alleges “health reasons.”
Paraguay’s Foreign Minister Euclides Acevedo announced that he will travel to Argentina next Thursday to negotiate with the country’s government a similar treatment given to Brazilians.
At the same time, he pointed out that the epidemiological argument does not reflect reality, as the significant decrease in the number of people in Paraguay infected with Covid is evident.
“The information available is that the border closure with Encarnación is more likely due to commercial than epidemiological issues.”
“I believe that, ultimately, we must demonstrate that trade is what unites us. Encarnación and Posadas have always lived as Siamese twins,” Acevedo said.
He added that the opening of trade, on firm grounds indicating a favorable epidemiological situation in Paraguay, should be a reason for the Argentine government to review its decision.
“There is no epidemiological reason for the San Roque González bridge to remain closed,” he stressed.
