Bayer announces new transgenic soy technology in Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Multinational Bayer on Friday, June 11, announced its new Intacta 2 Xtend technology for transgenic soybean seed, commercially available for the 2021/22 crop, which will be planted as of September, the company said in a statement.
This is Bayer’s third generation soy biotechnology and the company’s first launch in the country since the acquisition of Monsanto in 2018.
The company expects wide adoption in the market for the next crop, as the “Brazilian producers are fond of innovations and quickly implement new technologies.”
“In partnership with leading seed companies, more than 30 soy varieties will be positioned for the main growing regions in Brazil and will be available to all licensed producers, 3 of which developed exclusively for refuge areas.”
Also according to the statement, transgenic technology provides more comprehensive protection against the main caterpillars that affect oilseed crops, expanding its scope of defense against two relevant species – Helicoverpa armigera and Spodoptera cosmioides – among other benefits, such as tolerance to herbicides dicamba and glyphosate.
Genetically modified soy is claimed to be more productive and resistant to glyphosate, the top selling pesticide in Brazil and in the world.
