Behind the scenes of meeting between Bolsonaro and Brazilian Renewal Labor Party

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Jair Bolsonaro took another step towards the PRTB (Brazilian Renewal Labor Party) when on Tuesday late afternoon, April 27th, he welcomed members of the Fidelix family, which runs the party, at the Alvorada Palace. At the table, there was sugar cane juice, “pastel” and the future of the President of the Republic, who pledged to define where he will go until next Monday, May 3rd.

In attendance were Levy Fidelix Filho, Lívia Fidelix and Karina Fidelix, all children of Levy Fidelix, the party’s founder, who died last week. The conversation was friendly. Bolsonaro showed himself, in fact, willing to join the party, as long as he can take complete control of it, a requirement he makes to all those interested in joining him.

Fidelix’s heirs also showed interest in a deal, especially Levizinho and Lívia. Karina, although she has not externalized this in the conversation, internally, still shows fear. Her husband has electoral plans in São Paulo. Sources say that the couple does not rule out a closer relationship with João Doria (PSDB), Bolsonaro’s virtual opponent in 2022. The final word, however, will be up to Levy Fidelix’s widow and now president of PRTB, Aldinéia.

Not all moments were of convergence during the chat. Karina challenged Bolsonaro with the fact that the PRTB does not hold seats in the federal government. Unperturbed, the president reacted and argued that the agreement made during the campaign was to hand the vice-presidency of the Republic over to the party, which occurred.

Hamilton Mourão is a party affiliated. Bolsonaro also recalled that there are 64 positions available in the vice-presidency and was surprised to learn that none of them were with the PRTB. Even before Levy Fidelix’s death, Mourão’s decision not to give positions to his party upset the family, a feeling that worsened after his death.

Fidelix himself, on more than one occasion, told Mourão that he would like to be part of the government. Once, the possibility of him taking on the presidency of EMBRATUR was even rumored. It did not happen.

At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to meet again soon and left with the conviction that Bolsonaro may indeed join the PRTB. Mourão’s presence, according to what the president has been telling people he trusts, would not be an obstacle, provided he doesn’t have to share power with his vice president, with whom he has not had a good relationship for some time.

In addition to the PRTB, the captain is talking to the PSC (Christian Social Party), Brasil 35 (former PMB), DC (Christian Democracy), Patriot, and PL (Liberal Party), to which his chances of migrating are the lowest.
