Beached Blue Shark Dies on Guaratuba Beach in Paraná State

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Wednesday morning, February 19th, a blue shark was found stranded on Guaratuba beach, on the coast of Paraná in the South of the country.

According to information from the Correio do Litoral website, the animal was seen on the beach still alive around 6 AM. However, it died approximately two hours later.

On a video posted on social media, the blue shark is seen struggling on the sand. Two men then drag the animal further away from the water.

After agonizing for two hours, the animal died and was collected by a Guaratuba municipal tractor under the coordination of a team from the Center for Sea Studies (UFPR).

Soon after being collected, the shark was taken to the Rehabilitation and Oil Response Center (CreD) in Pontal do Paraná.

Blue shark: learn about the species

The blue shark is a species of the Carcharhinidae family, and can be found in deep ocean areas in both temperate and tropical waters.

According to previous records, the species had already been recorded near the Brazilian coast, and is one of the sharks with the highest migration potential.

The sharks may reach up to four meters in length and 240 kilos in weight; however, they typically do not exceed 2.5 meters and 70 kilos.
