Bolsonaro: Demonstrations Against Government Are ‘The Big Issue’

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Monday, June 8th, President Jair Bolsonaro declared that demonstrations against the government are “the big issue of the moment” for him. “They are starting to act out,” the President told supporters at the Alvorada Palace in the  morning. Bolsonaro said “We’re going to clean things up slowly,” starting with the first nomination he will make to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in November this year.

“How did I find this country? You’re right about what you’re arguing and what you’re talking about. I found a cancer in everything in this place. A doctor can’t fix this whole problem overnight. The major issue at the moment is what you’re witnessing here, a little bit on the streets yesterday, (they) are starting to act out,” he said.

Bolsonaro stated that there is “great interest” in the country and, therefore, in his perspective, there is “indoctrination over Brazil, a massification, increasingly forming militants”. “I will appoint the STF’s Justice now in November. The first. We’re going to tidy things up slowly here,” he said in reference to the fact that the Court’s longest-serving Justice, Celso de Mello, is retiring by reason of age.

Despite criticism of the movement in opposition to the government, Bolsonaro said that on Sunday “it was not the case” of his supporters taking to the streets on the same date. He reiterated, as he did last week, that he does not lead the movements.

As he did on social media, the President also tried again to place the blame for the efforts to fight the coronavirus on governors, although the federal government is not exempt from taking action. “The Supreme Court has given all the power to (the governors) to manage this kind of problem, I only inject billions into their hands. And some of them embezzle. Some do,” said Bolsonaro.
