Brazil and Austria Sign a Scientific and Technological Cooperation Agreement

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil and Austria sealed an agreement on scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries on Wednesday, June 19th. The document was signed in Vienna by the Brazilian Minister of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Communications, Marcos Pontes, and the Austrian Minister of Education, Science, and Culture, Iris Eliisa Rauskala.

The purpose of the agreement is to establish cooperation between Brazil and Austria in scientific and technological research and innovation. The agreement provides that the parties shall encourage and support the development of activities related to science and technology between governmental institutions, higher education institutions and national scientific and technological research centers in both countries.
The wording in the agreement emphasizes that one of its targets is “to establish a framework for research cooperation, which will broaden and strengthen the conduct of activities in areas of common interest, as well as encourage the use of the results of this cooperation for their economic and social benefits”.
Smart Cities
As from the signing of the agreement, the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Communications will seek partnerships with Austria primarily in technological applications in the area of smart cities. On Friday, June 21st, Minister Marcos Pontes will visit the Seestadt Aspern, a smart neighborhood project in Vienna.
The minister’s agenda in the Austrian capital also includes meetings with senior representatives of international organizations; a visit to weXelerate, Europe’s largest startup incubator; and attending the inauguration of a nuclear power laboratory.
