Brazil can harvest 134 million tons of soybeans, says consultancy Safras

The area of soybean planted in Brazil for this crop was estimated at 38.65 million hectares, or 3.3% higher than the 37.43 million hectares of the previous season. The survey indicates that average productivity should increase from 3,415 kilos per hectare to 3,487 kilos.

“The progress of the harvest is revealing the true potential of Brazilian production. Although there are problems in some state micro-regions, there are also records of great productivity in others, which ends up compensating for possible losses in the national total,” says Safras analyst Luiz Fernando Gutierrez.

According to the consultancy, adjustments were made in average yields expected for some states in all regions of Brazil, in addition to small adjustments in areas of some states in the North and Northeast regions.

The first fact that draws attention is the dispute between Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul for second place as the largest producer of soybeans in Brazil.

At this moment, the Gauchos are taking a slight advantage with the production of 20.1 million tons, a historical record and a great recovery from the 13.8 million tons collected in the 2019/2020 harvest, when they had a strong decline due to weather.

In turn, Paraná may harvest 20 million tons, 4.6% less than last year’s 21 million.

“The positive highlight stays with the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which even in a La Niña year, which historically brings problems to the state, is managing to consolidate a large production, recovering from the losses suffered in the 2019/2020 harvest″, he says.

The second fact that draws attention is that Mato Grosso should not beat last year’s record. According to the consultancy, the state should harvest something around 35 million tons, 1.2% less than last year’s 35.4 million tons.

Finally, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Bahia should even have a better harvest than last year. The Paulistas can harvest 4.2 million tons of soybeans (5.5% more than the 4 million of 19/20). According to Gutierrez, even the states of Mato Grosso, Goiás and Tocantins, which recorded excess humidity at certain times during the harvest, registered satisfactory average productivities.
