Brazilian coffee exports drop in April; CECAFÉ reinforces alert for 21/22
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Exports fell by 8.5% compared to the same month last year, totaling 3.3 million 60-kg bags.
Total Brazilian coffee exports reached 3.3 million 60-kg bags in April, a drop of 8.5% compared to the same month last year, said Tuesday the Council of Brazilian Coffee Exporters (CECAFÉ), which considers the result as positive given the logistical challenges faced by the sector.

According to the organization’s data, green coffee exports reached 3.03 million bags, a 7.1% decrease compared to last year, pressured by an 8.3% retraction in shipments of the arabica variety, which totaled 2.7 million bags.
The country also exported 331,100 bags of robusta coffee, up 8.3% compared to April 2020.
Revenue earned from the commodity’s exports last month totaled US$447.2 million in April, down 7.4% year-on-year, the Council added.
“The April result was positive, the second best for the last five years, and evidenced the logistical efficiency of Brazilian exporters, who continue to honor their commitments despite the ongoing logistical obstacles created by Covid-19 and by the concentration of trade flow in Asia, which, among other factors, reduces the availability of containers for coffee exports,” said the organization’s president, Nicolas Rueda.
CECAFÉ also noted that despite the monthly drop, Brazilian coffee exports recorded an 8.6% increase in the first four months of 2021, to 14.8 million bags, benefiting from the 2019/20 record harvest.
The industry continues to monitor weather conditions, which have impacted the volume to be harvested due to lower rainfall in the last quarter of 2020 and also in 2021,” said Rueda.
“Currently, although it is a period of less rainfall compared to other times of the year, it has been raining much less than the historical average for the Southeast region, Brazil’s main coffee belt, which will certainly affect the volume of the harvest and may be reflected in exports,” he added.
