Brazilian households in arrears for debt increase to 67.5% in April
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The share of families with debts in arrears increased in Brazil to 67.5% in April this year. In March, the percentage stood at 67.3%. The data were released yesterday, May 4th, by the National Confederation of Trade of Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC).
The result from April this year is the highest since August 2020, when 67.5% was also recorded.
The percentage of defaulters – people with unpayable debts – dropped from 25.3% in April last year and 24.4% in March this year, to 24.2% in April this year. This is the lowest rate since February 2020, hence the pre-pandemic period, at 24.1%.
The share of families that will be unable to pay their debts stood at 10.4% in April this year, down from 10.5% in March but up from 9.9% in April last year.
The average commitment time with debts among families was 6.8 months in April. The average time of payment delays for defaulters has been dropping since December and reached 61.4 days in April, the shortest term since July 2020.
The share of families that use credit cards as the main type of debt has grown again and reached a new record of 80.9% of the total number of families, according to the CNC.
