Brazilian new car market in May: Fiat broadens its lead in 2021
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Italian brand is capitalizing on the performance of the Argo, Strada and Mobi. The Caoa Chery overtakes Ford and joins the top 10 for the first time.
On Wednesday, June 2nd, the Brazilian National Association of Vehicle Manufacturers (FENABRAVE) released the official figures for new vehicle registrations in May.

A total of 175,405 new vehicles were registered, 7.03% more than in April and more than double a year ago – however, the comparison is unfair, as May 2020 was one of the worst months in the past decades due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The accumulated figure for 2021 has reached 837,125 units, up 30.7% compared to the first 5 months of last year. According to Alarico Assumpção Júnior, the entity’s president, the rise in numbers in May is related to deliveries of vehicles sold in the preceding months. “As a consequence of lower supply, vehicle stocks, for all segments, remain at a very low level,” said the executive.
In its 5th consecutive month at the top, Fiat (40,489) gained over 10,500 advantage over Volkswagen (28,960). In the year, the difference in favor of the Italian brand is now almost 37,000 units. Third, Chevrolet (17,291) was one of the few to sell less than in April and sees its goal of closing another year in the leadership among carmakers ever more distant.
Hyundai (16,847) and Toyota (15,531) completed the top 5. Jeep (13,510) again finished ahead of Renault (12,299). One of the highlights last month was the presence of Caoa Chery (3,186) for the first time in the top 10 – Ford (3,045) was surpassed by a little over 100 units. Among the premium brands, BMW (1,262) sold almost twice as many cars as Volvo (643).
