Brazilians Must Supply Tax ID Numbers to Receive International Purchases

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Some foreign online stores have started to request Brazilian consumers’ CPF (federal tax identification number) to meet a new requirement of the federal postal service Correios.

As of January 1st, 2020, international purchase packages should display the recipient’s identification number next to the delivery address.

The report has been confirmed by the Correios. According to the company, the CPF should be present “in any and all imports that are sent to Brazil” to meet Federal Treasury standards.

In addition to the CPF, business customers should provide their National Register of Legal Entities (CNPJ) or passport number. Should the order fail to include this data, it will be returned to the country of origin or destroyed, in situations where the return is not possible.

In a note, the Correios advises that consumers may track the delivery and link the code of the order to the identification document through the section My Imports, available on its website or App.

“It is important that the person in charge of the import tracks the order in order to effect the payment of taxes and postal service,” says the company. The new requirement is already forcing stores such as AliExpress and GearBest to request the CPF from Brazilian customers.

Since 2018, the Correios requires the CPF of sender and recipient in shipments made without an invoice “to comply with the tax legislation determination”. In addition to the document, the company began to request the list of items sent and their respective prices.
