Brazil’s National Science and Technology Week Kicks off This Monday

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The goal is to promote this type of knowledge, often restricted to academics, to all citizens, particularly young people.

SNCT is an initiative of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations, and Communications (MCTIC), in partnership with state and municipal secretariats in these fields, in addition to universities, schools and teaching and research institutions.

This year, SNCT’s topic will be “Bioeconomy: diversity and wealth for sustainable development”.

Each year, a subject is chosen as a means to guide the activities and focus on related problems. According to the MCTIC, the topic was chosen due to the relevance of promoting projects aimed at stimulating sustainable development in various fields, such as industrial biotechnology, health, and agronomy, among others.

Until Sunday, October 27th, over 5,200 activities will be sponsored by 172 institutions linked to federal, state and municipal governments, schools, research centers, and civil society organizations.

In all, the events prepared for the week will be held in 278 municipalities, in 23 states and the Federal District.

In Brasília, the “Avenida da Ciência” (“Science Avenue”) will be set up in the city’s central region. Around more than 21,000 square meters, 180 exhibitors will introduce science in various ways, such as aircraft, vehicles, machines, and laboratories.

Classes and workshops on various topics will also be offered, such as rocket construction and robotics.

National Month

The ministry decided to expand the week’s activities, and the federal government designated October as the National Month of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications, a celebration that will be held henceforth by the Executive branch.

The designation will be made by decree to be published by the Presidency “soon,” according to the ministry.

According to an official statement on its website, the purpose of the national month will be “to motivate the population, children, and youths in particular, on issues and activities in the area, valuing creativity, scientific approach, innovation, and communication”.
