BRF says Saudi Arabia imposed new restrictions on chicken meat
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Meat producer BRF said on Tuesday it is assessing the financial impact of new restrictions imposed by Saudi Arabia on chicken meat sales, which will reduce the allowable shelf life of frozen products from one year to three months.
BRF said in a statement that the Saudi authorities have notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) of the change, and that the company will assess the consequences in connection with the competent authorities for the adoption of any applicable measures, in line with WTO agreements.
Member countries of the organization potentially affected by the measure may submit comments within 60 days from the date of notification, the company added.
The new restriction comes after Saudi Arabia last week announced the suspension of chicken meat exports from 11 Brazilian meatpacking plants, providing no explanations, although BRF plants were not affected by this round of suspensions.
The Brazilian government had previously stated that it had initiated contacts with Saudi Arabia regarding the bans.
