Brazil opens net 316,580 formal jobs in July – Ministry

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil registered 316,580 job openings in July, according to the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Caged) released Thursday (25) by the Ministry of Economy. With this result, the country has created a net official 1,848,304 jobs in the first seven months of the year.

This is the first release of data with the new portfolio, newly created in early August and led by Onyx Lorenzoni.

The formal labor market has recorded a strong recovery since July 2020 – the exception was December, which showed a negative balance. In the first half of the year, the country recorded 1.5 million new jobs, especially in the services and trade sectors.

The progress in job creation in the formal market reflects the improvement in economic activity. Still, it is also a consequence of the Employment and Income Maintenance (BEm) program, which allows the suspension of labor contracts and the reduction of working hours and wages, with a subsequent period of job stability.

As of July, there were 1.9 million workers who were not stabilized by agreements until 2020, according to government data.

The program was relaunched in 2021 and came back into effect at the end of April. This Thursday, the last day of the program, 3.2 million agreements had already been signed.

CAGED X PNAD

The Caged result contrasts with the results of IBGE’s National Household Sample Survey (Pnad Continuous). The data released Wednesday showed that the unemployment rate in Brazil stood at 14.7% in the quarter that ended in April, maintaining the highest level in the historical series that began in 2012. The number of unemployed reached 14.8 million.

The Pnad takes into account formal and informal jobs and presents quarterly data. In contrast, the information from the Caged reflects only the monthly number of formal jobs.

While the IBGE survey examines all types of employment in the formal and informal markets and entrepreneurs and public sector employees, Caged considers only those working with a signed employment contract.
