Brazil to Have Largest Vaccine Manufacturing Plant in Latin America
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) and the Industrial Development Company of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CODIN) yesterday, September 17th, signed an agreement to install the largest vaccine plant in Latin America.
The Industrial Complex of Biotechnology in Health will cover an area of 580,000 square meters and will have a production capacity of 120 million vaccine vials and biopharmaceuticals per year. It will be located in Santa Cruz, in the west zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The vaccines against meningitis, hepatitis, and DPT [diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus], which are currently imported, will start to be produced in the plant.
The agreement provides for the erection of nine buildings and its inauguration is scheduled for 2023 and should generate 5,000 direct jobs.
The complex will be responsible for all Fiocruz vaccine production, including that for Covid-19, once it is approved.
