Brazil Will Produce Gasoline Having Same Quality As That Sold in USA and Europe
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Starting in August, Brazil will produce gasoline of similar quality to that sold at the pumps in the United States and Europe.

Petrobras‘ Refining and Gas Director, Anelise Lara, announced on Tuesday that in the second half of this year the production at the company’s refineries will follow new requirements. Among other advantages, the new gasoline will ensure better performance of automobile engines and reduced consumption, Lara explained.
The price per liter, however, will be a little more expensive, according to the executive, but this will be offset by lower consumption.
Lara explained the change during a videoconference on Sustainable Mobility and the Future of Fuel, held by the Brazilian Association of Automotive Engineering (AEA).
In January this year, the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) approved a resolution aimed at improving the quality of gasoline produced in Brazil.
Any refiner that produces or imports gasoline in the country will have to adopt the new specifications.
“This improvement in gasoline quality was a significant victory and will now become effective in August. The new specification, both for regular and premium gasoline, will have the advantage of reducing consumption. In other words, greater energy efficiency, running more miles per liter, and providing greater protection for engines. This change brings the quality of our gasoline closer to gasoline sold in the American and European markets,” said Lara.
Petrobras’ director explained that the price will be a little higher due to its policy of pricing parity with the better-quality petrol available abroad, which is more expensive. But she assured that the reduction in consumption will offset this higher cost.
“As Petrobras practices the import parity price, the comparison will be made with better quality gasoline from abroad. So, it will be a little higher, but it will offset greatly because it will be more efficient gasoline. In the end, in terms of cost for the consumer, we believe it will be positive because more kilometers can be run with fewer liters,” said Lara.
The director explained that the gasoline to be produced under the new specifications will maintain the same 27 percent addition of anhydrous ethanol.
“Gasoline will increase its intrinsic quality, in terms of octane rating and specific mass, which are very positive features. In other words, we will have better quality regular gasoline”.
