Brazilian Government Should Retain 40 Percent Stake in Eletrobras

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – According to the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, the Brazilian federal government should retain a 40 percent stake in Eletrobras after the company’s capitalization process.

Albuquerque attended the office of Chamber President, Rodrigo Maia, to deliver the bill on the privatization proceeding. According to him, the proposal calls for the government to retain a significant stake in the company.

Bento said that Maia “is aware of the project’s significance to the energy sector”. He further stressed the loss of investment power of the state-owned company and, hence, the need for the bill.

Albuquerque said it is expected that its processing in Congress will be completed by the second half of 2020. Still, according to the minister, the Chamber President should establish a special committee to address the issue.
