Brazilian Spending on International Travel Falls 5.2 Percent in August

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – With the dollar on the rise, Brazilian spending on overseas travel fell in August. Last month, spending totaled US$1.31 billion (R$5.24 billion), a decrease of 5.2 percent from the same month in 2018 (US$1.382 billion). The data were released yesterday, September 23rd by the Central Bank.

In the eight months of the year, the expenses for trips abroad are also lower. In this period, expenses reached US$12 billion, a 5.3 percent drop compared to the same period last year (US$12.69 billion).

Revenues from foreigners traveling to Brazil reached US$464 million last month and US$4.14 billion in eight months, down 3.8 percent and 0.04 percent, respectively, compared to the same periods in 2018. As a result, the travel account, formed by expenses and revenues, closed with a deficit in August at US$846 million and in the eight months of the year with a deficit of US$7.88 billion.
