RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Eletrobras reported an increase of thirty percent in the country’s installed capacity and exceeded the total of 50,000 MW. According to the state-owned company, the number covers 128 plants owned by its subsidiaries or which rely on its participation in sectorial enterprises.
On Tuesday, August 20th, Eletrobras launched its fifteenth powerplant generation unit in Belo Monte, with a total installed capacity of 50,207 MW. According to the company, through the activation in July of the fourteenth generation unit of Belo Monte, on the Xingu River in Pará, it became the largest hundred-percent Brazilian hydroelectric power plant.
“In 2019, another three Belo Monte power plants are planned to start operating,” it announced in a statement. According to Eletrobras, the 50,000 MW mark reaffirms its companies’ contribution “so that Brazil has one of the largest renewable energy sources and with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions in the world, in addition to housing some of the largest hydroelectric power plants on the planet.”
