Retail Trade Grows one Percent in July in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The retail sales volume grew one percent from June to July of this year according to data from the Monthly Trade Survey (PMC) released yesterday, September 11th, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This is the third positive result of the indicator, which accumulated a high of 1.6 percent in the period.

Sales volume also grew 0.5 percent on quarterly mobile average, 4.3 percent in comparison with July of last year, 1.2 percent in the accumulated for the year, and 1.6 percent in the accumulated 12 months.

From June to July, seven of the eight activities surveyed had high sales, especially supermarkets, food, beverages, and tobacco (1.3 percent), other articles for personal and household use (2.2 percent), and furniture and household appliances (1.6 percent).

There was also growth in fabrics, clothing, and footwear (1.3 percent), pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, perfumery, and cosmetic articles (0.7 percent), fuels and lubricants (0.5 percent), and books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery (1.8 percent).

Only the activity that fell in July was of office equipment and supplies, information technology and communication (-1.6 percent).

In expanded retail, which also analyzes the vehicle and construction materials sectors, sales volume grew 0.7 percent. The construction materials sector grew 1.1 percent, but the activity of vehicles, motorcycles, and parts retreated 0.9 percent.

The expanded retail market also saw growth of 0.5 percent in the quarterly mobile average, 7.6 percent in comparison with July 2018, 3.8 percent in the year-to-date, and 4.1 percent in the 12-month period to date.

Nominal retail revenues grew one percent compared to June, 6.7 percent compared to July last year, 4.9 percent in the year-to-date and 5.4 percent in the 12-month period ended in June. Extended retail revenues grew 0.3 percent compared to June, 9.5 percent compared to July 2018, 6.8 percent in the year-to-date, and 7.2 percent in the 12-month period to date.
