Net Unemployment Rate in Brazil Drops to 11.8 Percent in August

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil’s net unemployment rate dropped to 11.8 percent in the quarter that ended this past August. The index is lower than the 12.1 percent of the same period last year and the 12.3 percent of the quarter ending in May of this year.

The data is from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), released today, September 27th, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The total number of unemployed reached 12.6 million in August 2019, 3.2 percent less (419,000) than in May of this year (13 million), but remained stable compared to August last year. This number is offset by the increase in jobs this quarter (684,000 or 0.7%) over the quarter ending in May, and 1.84 million (a 2% gain) over the year ending August 2018.
