Coronavirus: Brazil Registers Record 600 Confirmed Deaths in One Day
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil accounts for 7,921 deaths caused by the coronavirus. According to data from the Ministry of Health, released on Tuesday, May 5th, the country recorded an additional 600 deaths and broke the record of confirmed fatalities in 24 hours.
The number of people diagnosed with Covid-19 stands at 114,715. Between Monday and Tuesday there were 6,935 new cases.
According to the Health Surveillance Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Wanderson Oliveira, the record is explained by the large number of delayed test results. Typically, on Tuesdays the health secretariats update test results that were held up over the weekend.

Yesterday, Brazil only lost in death toll to the United States, which reported 823 deaths, and the United Kingdom, with 693 victims.
Last Sunday, May 3rd, the country became the 9th nation to reach the 100,000 mark of infected people. Ahead of Brazil are the United States, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia and Turkey. In terms of deaths, the country ranks 7th, according to data from Johns Hopkins University in the United States.
The Ministry of Health works with several projections as to when Brazil will peak in the pandemic and then watch the number of cases decline. There is a greater trend of increasing in May and June, autumn months in the Southern Hemisphere.
“We don’t know exactly how much of the non-pharmacological measures being implemented, such as social distancing, washing hands, the use of masks, will have a positive impact on reducing the circulation of respiratory viruses, not just the coronavirus,” said Wanderson Oliveira.
