Court of Appeals overturns injunction suspending restrictions against Covid in Rio de Janeiro
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Rio de Janeiro Court of Appeals (TJ-RJ) on Wednesday. May 5, overturned an injunction suspending social isolation decrees issued by the capital city’s mayor to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Judge Henrique Figueira, the presiding judge, stated in his ruling that the population’s lack of discipline could result in unacceptable crowds in times of pandemic.

“It would be true anarchy and a lack of minimal control by the government over the public,” said Figueira.
On Wednesday, a lower court had voided social isolation decrees issued by the Rio de Janeiro city hall to prevent the spread of Covid-19, granting a petition filed by state deputy Anderson Moraes (PSL).
Last Friday, Rio’s City Hall maintained restrictions on access to beaches on weekends, as well as a curfew from 11 PM to 5 AM, and a ban on concerts, shows, and other events that could lead to crowds.
This Friday, after the TJ-RJ decision overruling the lower court, the municipal government may announce an update of restrictive measures.
