Fear of Unemployment Drops and Satisfaction Increases in Brazil, Says CNI Survey

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Even after the drop, fear remains above the historical average, which is 50.1 points. The information is from a survey released yesterday, October 3rd, by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI).

The indicator ranges from zero to one hundred points. The higher the index, the greater the fear of unemployment.

The greatest drop in unemployment fear was found among people with less education and income. Among those with up to the fourth grade of elementary school, the indicator fell 5.4 points and dropped from 65.1 points in June to 59.7 in September.

Among those who earn up to a minimum wage, fear of unemployment dropped four points, from 72.8 in June to 68.8 in September.

Fear of unemployment is greatest among residents in the Northeast, where it reached 69.7 points – the region was the only one to record an increase in unemployment fear in September.

Fear is lower in the South, where the indicator was 47.7 points. In the Southeast, it was 58.5 points and, in the North/Center-West, 49.3 points.

Satisfaction with life

The survey also shows the level of satisfaction of Brazilians with their lives. The life satisfaction index reached 69 points in September, 1.6 points higher than in June.

The indicator, which is 3.1 points higher than last September, is also below the historical average of 69.6 points.

Life satisfaction increased in all regions of the country. It is highest in the South, where it reached 71 points. In the Northeast it was 68.1 points, the Southeast recorded 68.8 points and in the North/Center-West it was 68.6 points.

This edition of the quarterly survey interviewed 2,000 people in 126 municipalities between September 19th and 22nd.
