Federal Police Investigation Into Eduardo Bolsonaro Worries the President

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In Jair Bolsonaro’s mind, there are plenty of reasons to remove Maurício Valeixo from his position as General-Director of the Federal Police.

According to officials with access to the upper echelons of the Federal Police, however, some of his main reasons are linked to the investigations into his #3 son, Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro.

Routinely concerned about appearing confident, Eduardo has recently shown signs of concern with the fake news investigations, to the extent that he appealed to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in an attempt to prevent the extension of the CPMI (Congressional Inquiry Committee), which investigates the mass spread of fake news on social media.

“This move suggests that Eduardo’s involvement with illegal activities is much worse than we thought,” comments Deputy Junior Bozella (PSL-SP), a member of the committee.

One of the central figures of this concern is Eduardo Guimarães, part of Eduardo’s staff and in charge of the “Bolsofeios” page, one of the main Internet fake news promoters. As disclosed in March, the page was generated by an IP inside the Chamber of Deputies.

The e-mail linked to “Bolsofeios” is Guimarães’ working e-mail. As soon as it was exposed by Deputy Joice Hasselmann (PSL-PR), the page was taken down, but its creator is still on the police radar.

Guimarães is an old acquaintance of the presidential family: he was in charge of updating the information of the then-candidate Jair Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign on social media.

Today, he is one of the names under investigation by the STF inquiry into the attacks on the reputation of its justices and members of Congress. In this investigation, the Federal Police used data from the Fake News CPMI.

Some individuals in these two investigations are now repeated in the inquiry launched at the request of Prosecutor General Augusto Aras, to determine those responsible for the protest held on Sunday April 19th outside the Army headquarters in Brasília, which called for the closure of Congress and the Supreme Court.

Aras intends to resort to the National Security Law to punish the protest’s organizers, the entrepreneurs who financed it, and the deputies who helped publicize it. In light of this, the presidential son #3 expressed his concern once again. He signed a joint note released yesterday by 25 deputies in an attempt to evade responsibility for anti-democratic messages.

In the text, Eduardo Bolsonaro and 24 fellow Chamber members deny having “supported or encouraged actions detrimental to Congress, the STF or any other institution”. Clearly, this is a preliminary defense intended for the investigation launched by the Supreme Court, at the request of the Office of the Prosecutor General (PGR).

These three investigations are linked to Eduardo Bolsonaro. And they should be completed soon. Carlos Bolsonaro, for his involvement with the so-called “hate bureau,” and Flávio Bolsonaro, in the Queiroz case, are also in the Federal Police’s sights.

Nothing makes the President more uneasy than watching his sons under threat.
