Foreign Website Purchases Lacking CPF or CNPJ Could Be Returned or Destroyed

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – As of Wednesday, January 1st, The Federal Treasury of Brazil is requiring that all international orders and shipments include the recipient’s CPF (Individual Tax Identification Number), the CNPJ (Legal Entity Tax Identification Number) or passport number, in order to have the Customs clearance initiated.

The lack of information may bar entry of the goods and their return abroad or destruction, in cases where the return is not possible.

The data should be entered at the time of the online purchase and accompany the order.

In case the data is not supplied at the time of purchase, or if the sender has not forwarded the data together with the shipment, the Correios (Postal Service) provides an information tool on its website, through the Minhas Importações (My Imports) portal.

Registration in the portal, with the CPF, CNPJ or passport number (foreign) will be required, as well as login and a password.

According to the Treasury, after registration, simply perform the search under Encomendas (Orders) and link the shipments under My Imports. Only after this procedure, may orders be submitted to customs supervision.
