Higher electricity bill in Brazil: ANEEL readjusts red flag 2 by 52%

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - The National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) on Tuesday, June 29, approved a red flag 2 tariff rise. The extra charge increased the charge from R$6.24 (US$1.26) to R$9.49 per 100 kWh consumed.

The tariff flag stood at level 2 in June, the most expensive, but ANEEL decided to raise the tariff amid a crisis in hydroelectric reservoirs.

The water crisis, the result of the worst worst low water period in 91 years in power plants, has increased the use of more expensive thermoelectric plants, whose cost included in consumer tariffs . . .
