IBGE slightly reduces estimate for Brazil 2021 grain harvest to 250.9 million tons
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Brazilian grain harvest this year, which is in its final stage, is expected to reach 250.9 million tons, 1.3% less than in 2020, according to the new Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA) of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), released on Thursday (07). Compared to the forecast released last month, the estimate is 0.3% lower.
When detailing the calculations, the IBGE informed that, before the 2020 harvest, there was a 10.3% growth in soy production, to 134 million tons – a new record – and a 16.4% decrease in corn production, to 86.3 million tons.
For rice, the estimate is 11.5 million tons, an increase of 4.4%, and for herbaceous cotton, 5.9 million tons, a drop of 17.5%.
Soybeans, corn, and rice together represent 92.4% of the Brazilian grain production and occupy 87.7% of the harvested area.
The new LSPA confirms that, in total, the area planted in grain will reach 68.3 million hectares in 2021, a rise of 4.4% compared to 2020.
