Brazil Is World Record Holder for Spam Phone Calls

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A report organized by the Truecaller app pointed out that Brazil is the nation with the highest number of spam phone calls. Another 19 countries were researched and analyzed based on the number of calls and unwanted messages detected by the app.

The country has topped the unfortunate ranking since 2018, when it overtook India. Compared to 2019, the survey showed a 9% increase in calls of this type, from an average of 45.6 to 49.9 calls received monthly. Over the past three years, the number of spam calls has grown 141% in Brazil.

Currently, the United States ranks second, showing a growth of 56% compared to 2019, when it ranked eighth. In the same period, countries like Chile, Peru and Colombia recorded a drop in spam calls.

The report also points out that most (48%) of spam calls made in Brazil are in the fraud call category, reflecting the increase in attempted scams during the pandemic. Financial institutions rank second, accounting for 42% of these calls with credit card, insurance and loan offers.
