Brazil´s Superior Court Data Systems Gradually Restored Following Hacker Attack

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Federal Superior Court (STJ), Brazil’s second-highest federal court, re-established on Monday, November 9th, using the Justice System – the Court’s main instrument. In a note, the STJ stated that data is being recovered from the backup and that work is progressing as expected and with the precautions that the situation requires.

On Tuesday, November 3rd, the Court’s data systems were the target of a hacker attack, which caused the interruption of several trials occurring concurrently by videoconference, in the six STJ divisions. All legal procedural deadlines were suspended. The urgent demands are centralized in the presidency of the Court and, according to a note by the STJ, are still being examined and decided within the deadlines established in procedural legislation, including the weekend.

According to the note, released on Saturday, November 7th, in addition to the cooperation of the Cyber Defence Command of the Brazilian Army, the presidency of the STJ also received support from the Ministry of Economy’s Special Secretariat of Debureaucratization, Management and Digital Government.

“The Federal Police are investigating the consequences of the hacker attack on the Court’s information technology network, including the extent of access to files, as well as possible data copies. The investigation of the crime is still in secrecy,” it stated.
