Second Death Confirmed in Brazil, First in Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The municipality of Miguel Pereira, in the center-south of the state of Rio de Janeiro, published on its social media that a 63-year-old woman with coronavirus symptoms died in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Earlier on Monday, the first death of a patient in São Paulo – a 62-year-old man – was confirmed.

According to the official note, the victim worked in the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro and had contact with her employer, who had just returned from Italy, infected with the Covid-19.

The note from the City Hall:

“Maintaining transparency and information to all citizens, Miguel Pereira’s Municipality reports that today, sadly, a 63-year-old female patient died of suspected symptoms of the new coronavirus.

The patient, who worked in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, was in direct contact with her employer, who had arrived from Italy and tested positive for the COVID-19. She was admitted to Luiz Gonzaga Municipal Hospital in critical condition, having come directly from her work environment to the health facility.

The authorities’ report on the case will be issued within 24 hours, where more information on the cause of death will be included.

We regret and express our solidarity with the family and report that the City Hall and Luiz Gonzaga Municipal Hospital are taking all measures to tackle the new coronavirus. It is of utmost importance that at this time, the population follows all the guidelines set by the Municipal Health Department and to be alert to any symptoms.
