Unicamp and USP Develop Quick and Inexpensive Coronavirus Test
SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – Researchers at the University of Campinas (Unicamp) are developing a rapid Covid-19 test, able to confirm the infection in five minutes, up to 50 percent cheaper than the options available in the market as well as more comprehensive. Expected to be available in May, the test is developed in partnership with the University of São Paulo (USP), including scientists who conducted the genetic sequencing of the novel coronavirus.

Professor Rodrigo Ramos Catharino, from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the State University of Campinas (SP), explains that a sort of “fingerprint” of the novel coronavirus was required to develop the test.
“We can call this a fingerprint, and this design features a clear fingerprint of the molecules found in the disease related to Covid-19, and this is what we detect and determine as being Covid-19,” he explains.
From the information collected, scientists use an artificial intelligence program to locate the biomarkers that determine the presence of Covid-19. The researchers have used and inserted other biomarkers, such as H1N1, in the database, which enables diagnosis for medical therapy.
According to Catharino, the Ethics Committee needs to approve the biomarkers for testing on humans and it is expected to be available for use by mid-May.
According to the researchers, the new test, 100 percent Brazilian, should cost approximately R$40 (US$8), half the price of the products now on the market, which are all imported.
Scientists advise that as soon as it is ready, the test technology can be used in other cities throughout Brazil.
“It is possible to perform a greater number of tests with this same technology, including the {national health system) SUS,” adds Catharino.
