Military and Legislative Leadership Intervene to Keep Mandetta in Office, Despite Bolsonaro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Uncomfortable about having a subordinate who thinks and acts differently from himself, over the weekend President Jair Bolsonaro had signalled his intent to dismiss Luiz Henrique Mandetta from the Ministry of Health on Monday and replace him with Federal Deputy Osmar Terra (MDB).

The President backed down on Monday.

As soon as the news surfaced, powerful pressures arose to prevent the President from carrying out the dismissal of the Minister, who is more popular than his own boss, due to the coordination of actions to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
