RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – According to the minister, the guidelines to regulate the new technology should be released by the end of this year.

Brazil has a Digital Strategy (E-digital), launched in 2018, containing only general guidelines for the country’s digital transformation.

The national policy will guide the research, development, and use of artificial intelligence applications. “The goal is for Brazil not to lag behind in this area. There is no turning back. We have to keep up and be leading players in technology,” said Marcos Pontes.

The Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Communications will open eight laboratories for research in the field of artificial intelligence later this year, in partnership with the São Paulo State Foundation for Research Support (FAPESP). Of these, four will feature specific areas: industry, agronomy, cities, and health.

“This technology [artificial intelligence], combined with the internet of things and the fifth generation of mobile internet that is coming to Brazil, will change people’s lives. And the government will be ready to play a leading role in this change,” the minister said.

Brazilian astronauts

Asked about the first space walk led by women, which took place last Friday, Pontes replied that in the future the Space Center of Alcântara could form groups of Brazilian astronauts and also conduct spacewalks.

“We are already mastering several launch technologies, among which the burning of liquid propellant. But we have to advance our space program, build, test and launch our own satellites. From there, we can start a space program that is sovereign. I would be very proud to train such a group,” concluded the minister.
