Minister Announces Integration Works Between Brazil and Uruguay

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, met yesterday, August 17th, with Uruguay’s Minister of Transport and Public Works, Luís Alberto Héber, to discuss the execution of works to connect the borders.

Following the online meeting, it was decided that Brazil will hold a bidding process for the building of a new bridge on the Jaguarão River in Rio Grande do Sul, which separates the two countries, and studies on dredging and signaling of the Brazil-Uruguay waterway will begin.

According to the Ministry, the bridge will cost R$150 million and the bidding is expected to be completed this year. The rehabilitation of the Barão de Mauá Bridge is also planned, and the draft improvements have already been approved.

The waterway dredging and signaling works should enable the flow of the rice crop from northern Uruguay to the port of Rio Grande (RS). The environmental license was requested by the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) to the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), and the tenders should be held next year.

According to the Minister, integration with Brazil’s other partner countries will also be pursued. “Today an important step was taken in the relations between Uruguay and Brazil with the integration of the infrastructure agendas in both countries. From here on we will call on the other partner countries, such as Argentina and Paraguay, to set the goals so that this agenda may be implemented and to strengthen the economy on our borders,” he said.
