Ministry of Justice: Brazil Records 1,637 Cases of Electoral Crimes

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Ministry of Justice and Public Safety has changed the data published in the 5 PM report on crimes committed against candidates during this Sunday’s elections.

The document now reports that a total of 38 occurrences of crimes against candidates have been recorded, the same data previously reported. However, there has been a change in the detailed number by type of case.

The portfolio now states that there were 26 occurrences of threats to candidates and six attempted murders, in addition to the same six cases of aggravated assault reported earlier. The earlier version also mentioned eight homicides of candidates, data that no longer shows in the corrected report.

The data on electoral crimes (1,637) and the overall total of all reported crimes (2,171) remained unchanged.

First report

The Ministry of Justice and Public Safety reported that the country has so far recorded 1,637 electoral crimes on Sunday in the first round of municipal elections. Of this total, 783 refer to the exit poll and 332 to the purchase of votes.

The data are included in a report published at 5 PM by Operation 2020 Elections, coordinated by the Integrated Center for National Command and Control (CICCN), linked to the Justice portfolio.

Among the electoral crimes, fake news (34), transport of voters (92) and damage to the ballot box (1), among others, were also recorded.

The report also lists 38 crimes against candidates, of which 123 were threats, ten were attempted murders, eight were homicides of candidates, and six were aggravated assault cases.

In the overall total, including voter crimes and other types of crimes, 2,171 occurrences were recorded in the country by 5:00 PM.
