Public Safety Project Reduces Homicides and Robberies in Five Brazilian Cities
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The five municipalities to be subject to actions by “Em Frente, Brasil”, Sérgio Moro‘s public safety project, have recorded a 53 percent homicide decrease in September, compared to the same month last year.
Since August 30th, federal, state and municipal security forces have been operating in Ananindeua (PA), Cariacica (ES), Goiânia (GO), Paulista (PE) and São José dos Pinhais (PR).
The first month’s results show that in September, 39 homicides were recorded in these five municipalities. In the same month last year, there were 83 occurrences.
The task forces have also reduced robberies by almost 40 percent. Last month there were 2,316 robberies in the five municipalities involved in the “Em Frente, Brasil,” while in 2018 this number exceeded 3,500 cases.
The task forces in the five municipalities are made up of members of the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police, the National Secretariat of Public Security, the Secretariat of Integrated Operations, the Civil and State Police, the Fire-fighter Brigades, the Penitentiary System and the Municipal Guards.
During this period, an average of 883 public safety officers and 321 vehicles per day were employed in the five municipalities. More than 92,000 people were approached, and 44,877 vehicles and 1,458 establishments were inspected.
The joint action resulted in the seizure of 69 weapons and more than 15 tons of drugs. A total of 69 arrest warrants were served. A total of 544 people were arrested and 81 minors detained.
