Ongoing squabbles in political party that may harbor President Bolsonaro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In yet another chapter of the Patriota party’s internal struggle to affiliate president Jair Bolsonaro, the party’s leader Adilson Barroso cancelled the call for a convention scheduled by his vice-president, Ovasco Resende, for June 24, at the request of the National Executive Committee and the National Directory.

Patriota has been in this state of internal disagreements since early this year, when the party split over its alignment with the Bolsonaro family.

The cancellation was published in the Federal Gazette (DOU) on Friday, June 18, in a statement signed by Barroso himself.

The party meeting agenda included discussions on “potential sanctions and
consequences” against Barroso and also definitions on changes in the party’s charter, in order to resolve the imbroglio that began at the meeting formalizing the affiliation of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (RJ), on May 31.

At the time, Flávio joined the Patriota through what the wing of Barroso’s opponents believe was a ploy to change the party’s charter and weaken the group led by Ovasco Resende.

The convention’s cancellation comes two days after the convocation called by the party’s vice-president, who is now describing the successive incidents as a “festival of errors and nullities.” “This will all be annulled, it has no support whatsoever. We don’t know where they are going with this. It is totally misplaced,” Resende said.

In another statement, also published on Friday in the Federal Gazette, Barroso set a new convention for June 22, one day after another he had previously scheduled for June 21.

Queried by the reporter, the party leader said that the attempt is to reach a consensus. “While we are trying to reach a consensus among the Patriota members, we are scheduling the convention because if there is consensus, we will not waste any more time,” Barroso wrote in a message.

In a return note dated June 7, the Notary Public of the 1st Notary Office of the Federal District pointed out a number of irregularities in the convention held on May 31 that resulted in Flávio Bolsonaro’s affiliation.

In the document, the body requested confirmation of a qualified quorum to deliberate on changes to the party’s bylaws. The list of names that took part in the online convention and voted for the approval of the charter reform was also requested.

The Patriota has been in this state of internal disagreements since early this year, when the party split over its alignment with the Bolsonaro family.

The split divided the affiliates of the former PEN (National Ecological Party) and PRP (Progressive Republican Party) – it was the merger of the two that gave rise to Patriota, in April 2018. The wing linked to vice president Ovasco Resende says it is not opposed to the rapprochement, but rather to the way it is being conducted.
