RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A new cyclone (extratropical storm) is expected to strike Santa Catarina next Tuesday, July 7th. However, the phenomenon should not be as intense as the bomb cyclone that hit the state this week.
“The cyclone we experienced on June 30th and July 1st was different, mainly as a result of the cold front and the resulting instability that passed through Santa Catarina,” says the Marilene de Lima, a meteorologist at EPAGRI/CIRAM (Centre of Environmental Resources Information and Hydrometeorology).
Lima explains that in the case of the bomb cyclone, in addition to its formation, the passage of a cold front toward the coast was contributing to causing storms.
“The cyclone had different features because we also had low-pressure areas in the west of Santa Catarina. We had instability lines associated with the cold front that crossed the state that, in general, are connected to an extratropical cyclone,” commented Lima.
The next cyclone should produce rainfall and wind gusts of up to 70 km/h mainly in the South Plateau. The forecast is for the formation of swells, and navigation is not advised.
The meteorologist explains that the passage of this new cyclone may cause damage, but it should not have the same destructive potential as the last phenomenon.
