Office Building Collapses, Leaving Five Injured in Paraná State

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A two-story office building collapsed in the early hours of Saturday, July 4th, in Colombo, in the metropolitan area of Curitiba, leaving five people injured.

It is suspected that the collapse has been caused by shocks to the structure following an excavation in a nearby plot of land.

The building housed a supermarket, which was closed down, a gym, and two apartments upstairs. Five people from the same family were trapped under the rubble and rescued by teams from the Paraná Fire Department.

Among the victims were an adult couple, a 50-year-old woman, and two children, a six and a ten years old.

The 50-year-old woman and the two children were rushed to Mackenzie Evangelical Hospital in Curitiba. One of the children fractured his leg and the other suffered excoriations. Both of them are fine. In a more serious condition, the woman is still hospitalized.

The couple, 29 and 25 years old, were taken to Trabalhador Hospital with minor injuries and are stable.

Fire and Civil Defense teams carried out on-site expertise and isolated the property. It is suspected that the collapse has been caused by shocks to the structure following an excavation in a nearby plot of land.

The case will be investigated by the Paraná Civil Police.
