Over 1,000 Covid-19 Deaths in Brazil for Third Straight Day (May 28th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil currently counts 26,754 deaths and 438,238 confirmed cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. There were a further 26,417 positive tests in 24 hours, a record since the first case. There were 1,156 more Covid-19 victims in one day.

This is the third straight day in which deaths have exceeded the 1,000 cases mark. The data were updated by the Ministry of Health on Thursday, May 28th.

Despite being the sixth most populous country in the world, Brazil ranks second in the number of deaths in one day, behind only the United States, which recorded 1,415 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In total, 177,604 have recovered from the disease. The Ministry of Health has scheduled a presentation for Friday, May 29th, for an epidemiological overview of the pandemic. However, it did not announce whether Eduardo Pazuello, the interim Minister, will take part in the press conference. The cabinet position of Minister of Health has been vacant for 13 days since Nelson Teich resigned.

The state of São Paulo also hit a record-breaking 6,382 new cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours. The former peak of 4,092 new cases in one day had been reached two weeks ago, on May 15th. With the increase, the state has 95,865 people infected. The number of deaths rose to 6,980, with 268 more deaths than the previous day.

The high rate was recorded a day after Governor João Doria announced the reopening of some sectors of the economy in certain regions, including the capital.

On Thursday, May 28th, the governor of Ceará, Camilo Santana, introduced the plan to reopen the state’s economic activities. The state is the third most affected by the pandemic, with 37,821 confirmed cases and 2,733 deaths.

Despite the announcement to renew the social isolation decree, which would end on Sunday, May 31st, some activities could resume as of June 1st, in a transitional stage.

The number of confirmed cases and deaths in Santa Catarina increased after the reopening of trade on April 13th, including shopping malls. Since then, the number of deaths has more than doubled, rising from 47 to 126. The state records the highest number of people infected with the coronavirus in the southern region, with 7,372 cases.
