RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Minister of Education Milton Ribeiro said that homosexuality occurs in “dysfunctional families”. The statement was made in an interview to the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.

“I think that teenagers who often choose to follow the path of homosexuality have a very close family context, just do a survey. These are dysfunctional families, some of them. They lack attention from their father, they lack attention from their mother,” said the Minister.

Still addressing sexual orientation as an option, Ribeiro said he “respects it, but does not agree with it.”

The Minister also mentioned a video that he said had been recorded at a university to take a stand against sex education in schools.

“They say it’s to protect unwanted pregnancy, but the truth is that talking to teenagers whose hormones are running high is the same thing as an incentive. It’s important to talk about how to prevent a pregnancy, but not to encourage gender discussions,” Ribeiro said.

Activist Erika Hilton, pre-candidate for PSOL party to the São Paulo city council, announced on social media that she has filed a petition for the impeachment of the Minister at the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGR) for his statements.
