Carlos Bolsonaro Justifies his Controversial Statement on Democracy

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Rio City Councilman Carlos Bolsonaro, son of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, justified on Tuesday, September 10th, his statement that there will not be the desired rapid changes in Brazil by democratic means.

He called journalists “scoundrels” for having wrongly interpreted the phrase posted on Twitter, on Monday, September 9th. Also on Twitter, Carlos now said that this was only a justification to those who ask for urgent changes, and that he never meant to say that he defends dictatorship.

“What I said was: by democratic means, things do not change quickly. That is a fact and is a justification for those who demand urgent changes. What journalists spread was: Carlos Bolsonaro defends dictatorship. SCOUNDRELS!”, he declared.

Monday’s message said: “By democratic means, the transformation that Brazil wants will not happen at the speed we want…”.

The post by the president’s son was criticized by politicians and the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), who saw it as an offense to the Brazilian democratic system.

Vice President Hamilton Mourão, Senate President Davi Alcolumbre, former Minister Ciro Gomes, and the governor of São Paulo, João Doria, refuted Carlos’ phrase.
