Beleaguered Prosecutor Dallagnol Waives Promotion, Will Retain Post in Lava Jato

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol has waived his promotion to the 4th Region Prosecutor’s Office (PRR-4) in Porto Alegre, where prosecutors deal with appellate cases heard by the 4th Region Federal Court.

He chose to remain on the Federal Prosecutor’s Office staff in Curitiba, in the post of head of Operation Lava Jato‘s task force there, the largest investigation ever launched in the country against corruption and money laundering.

On Monday, October 21st, Dallagnol sent a letter to the Superior Council of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, “stating that he has no interest in competing for promotion at the moment”.

In recent days, the prosecutor of Lava Jato has been challenged and the target of speculation about his future in the institution.

Cited for alleged misconduct in the conduction of Lava Jato, Dallagnol considered that, after repeated meetings with his peers, if he were to leave now he might give the impression that he was admitting to wrongdoing.

“The decision was made after talking to the other task force prosecutors and considered personal and professional aspects,” he said in a statement.
