EXAME/IDEIA: Bolsonaro Approval Rate at 41 Percent, Highest in Nearly Two Years
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro’s approval rate stands at 41 percent, the highest since February 2019. In the last survey, conducted in early November, the rating stood at 38 percent and fluctuated positively at the limit of the survey’s error margin, which is three percentage points plus or minus. Disapproval decreased from 34 to 31 percent. Those who neither approve nor disapprove of the President add up to 27 percent.
The data are from the most recent EXAME/IDEIA survey, a project that joins Exame Research and IDEIA, a research institute specialized in public opinion. The survey interviewed 1,200 people between November 16th and 19th.

The President’s approval had only once before stood at over 40 percent – in February 2019, when 45 percent of Brazilians approved of the way he governed. This percentage dropped to 20 percent in May this year, coinciding with the worsening number of cases and deaths from Covid-19 in the country.
The most significant increase occurred between July and August, when the Brazilians approving Jair Bolsonaro’s government rose from 27 to 37 percent. The period corresponds to the release of much of the R$600 monthly emergency aid payments to casual workers.
“The highest approval ratings of the federal government are very concentrated in the evangelical segment (50 percent), and in the North (52 percent), Midwest (52 percent) and South (54 percent) regions. The positive rating is always higher among these groups,” explains Maurício Moura, IDEIA’s founder.
Stratifying the research by age, the older the age group, the higher the approval of the Bolsonaro government. Among those aged 50 and over, the rate reaches 49 percent. The proportion is similar in regard to schooling, higher in the share of the better-schooled population. Approval reaches 42 percent among those with higher education.
According to economic class, disapproval is highest among the poor. In families with earnings of up to one minimum salary, 39 percent disapprove of the Bolsonaro government. On the other hand, among those who earn over five salaries, 32 percent do not approve the current administration.
The survey also asked how Brazilians assess the President’s government so far. The data are identical to current approval, with 41 percent considering it great/good, and 31 percent bad/terrible.
Second Covid-19 wave
Another item asked by the EXAME/IDEIA survey concerned a potential second wave of Covid-19 in Brazil. Of the total number of respondents, 52 percent believe that the country is likely to see a return to a high number of cases and deaths caused by the coronavirus. Among those who disapprove of the government, 42 percent are sure that the country will be affected by a second wave of infections.
