Protesters Plant Crosses Outside Congress, Criticize Bolsonaro
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Protesters planted a thousand crosses outside the National Congress on Sunday morning, June 28th, in memory of the Covid-19 victims and in protest against President Jair Bolsonaro‘s stance in fighting the novel coronavirus pandemic. The country records over 57,000 deaths from the disease.

The initiative was organized by the ‘Resistência e Ação’ (Resistance and Action) organization, a group of approximately 60 members. “These are people who disagree with the lack of a policy that values life, with the government’s neglect,” Cleide Martins, one of the organizers said. “We are aware that many of the people who are losing their relatives can not even say goodbye.”
In addition to the crosses, banners were placed on the site with catchwords against the President. On one of them “Bolsonaro, Mourão, and Centrão, Out” was written. The initiative is part of the #StopBolsonaro movement.
The event was attended by a number of Workers Party federal deputies. “It was a beautiful event in honor of the victims while stressing the need to remove Bolsonaro so that we can tackle this crisis,” said Federal Deputy Érika Kokay (PR-DF). Deputy Benedita da Silva (PT-RJ) and the national party president, Gleisi Hoffmann (PT-PR), were also present.
